How to create a redirection for the Password Manager web portal

Email It to Me Print this Page
Question I want users to access Password Manager by browsing to <servername> instead of <servername>/pm. How can I create a redirection to the Password Manager web-site?
Answer There are three ways to create a redirection.

Option 1. Change iisstart.htm file in the root folder of the Default Web site.
You will not be able to see the default web page in this case.
  1. Locate iisstart.htm (by default at C:\inetpub\wwwroot), right-click it and select Edit.
  2. Replace all existing text in the file with the following:
<html>
  <head>
    <meta http-equiv="Refresh" content="0; url=http://%servername%/pm" />
  </head>
</html>
  1. Save the changes to the file.

Option 2. Use HTTP redirect feature of IIS.

Please refer to the following article to find information about enabling this feature:
http://www.iis.net/configreference/system.webserver/httpredirect

Perform the following steps:
  1. Start IIS manager and in the left pane navigate to the web-site where the Password manager virtual directory (“PM” by default) is located
  2. In the central pane locate HTTP redirect feature under IIS category and double-click it.
  3. Enable Redirect requests to this destination and enter URL to redirect to (for example http://%servername%/pm)
  4. Enable Redirect all request to exact destination (instead of relative to destination) checkbox
  5. Enable Only redirect requests to content of this directory checkbox
  6. Set Status code to Found (202)
  7. Click Apply in the right pane

  2. In the central pane locate URL rewrite feature under IIS category and double-click it.
  3. Click Add rules… in the right pane
  4. Select Blank rule under Inbound rules in the Add rule(s) window that opens, click Ok
  5. Enter Name for the rule
  6. In Match URL area:
  1. Select Requested URL: Matches the pattern and Using: Regular expressions from the drop-down lists
  2. Enter the following Pattern: ^$
  3. Enable Ignore case checkbox
  1. In Action area:
  1. Select Action: Redirect and Redirect type: Permanent from the drop-down lists
  2. Enter Redirect URL (for example http://%servername%/pm)
  3. Enable Append query string checkbox
  1. Click Apply and then click Back to Rules. The configured rule should be now listed.

This steps will make Self-service portal to be accessible by short URL http://<servername> instead of http://<servername>/pm.

NOTE: If you want to make Self-service portal accessible from the external network, you need to create a DNS alias for the Password Manager Self-service portal address (for details see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/168322)
