About CJIS

The CJIS Security Policy is a set of security standards created by the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division. It governs how Criminal Justice Information (CJI) is accessed, handled, transmitted, and stored by criminal justice and noncriminal justice entities. It outlines technical and procedural requirements to protect sensitive data used in law enforcement operations and ensures consistent data protection across jurisdictions and systems.

What is CJIS compliance?
CJIS compliance follows the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy, which outlines how criminal justice data must be accessed, stored, transmitted, and protected.
Who needs to comply with CJIS?
Any agency or vendor that accesses, processes, or stores Criminal Justice Information must comply with CJIS requirements. That includes federal, state, and local law enforcement, as well as third-party IT providers, contractors, and cloud service providers that handle justice-related data.
What kind of data is considered CJI?
Criminal Justice Information includes anything from fingerprints and mugshots to court records, license plate data, and personal information about suspects, victims, or witnesses. If it's tied to a criminal investigation or justice system process, it's likely Criminal Justice Information and subject to CJIS rules.
What happens if my agency isn’t CJIS compliant?
Non-compliance can lead to penalties, loss of data access, failed audits, and disqualification from working with federal systems. More importantly, it puts highly sensitive information at risk and can erode public trust in crucial government agencies.
How does Netwrix help with CJIS compliance?
Netwrix CJIS software helps agencies enforce access controls, monitor data use, detect suspicious behavior, and access clear audit trails. Our solutions align with CJIS requirements to make it easier to secure Criminal Justice Information and prove compliance.
