Bank streamlines discovery of sensitive data and rebuilds its Active Directory in three weeks instead of six months

With Netwrix Auditor, First National Bank Minnesota enabled discovery and classification of sensitive data and improved its security posture.

Netwrix Corporation, provider of a visibility platform for data security and risk mitigation in hybrid environments, today announced that First National Bank Minnesota deployed Netwrix Auditor to gain visibility into its core IT systems and enhance the security of critical data and systems.

First National Bank Minnesota (FNB MN) was founded in 2005 as a result of the merger of the Security State Bank of Mankato and the First National Bank of St. Peter, which dates back to 1857. FNBMN has offices in St. Peter, Mankato and Gaylord, Minnesota, U.S. The bank offers a wide variety of personal banking products and services, business banking solutions, and investment services.

The bank’s IT department needed to automate auditing of its core IT systems for two reasons: to rebuild Active Directory for better security and to secure customer financial data. Mitigating data breaches was crucial, given the high risk they would pose to the bank’s reputation and continued existence.

Holly McCoy, senior information systems officer for First National Bank Minnesota, chose Netwrix Auditor for its ease of use and the ability to configure alerts based on thresholds that are critical for the bank. She shared the following benefits that Netwrix Auditor brought to the bank:

  • Discovering, classifying and securing sensitive data. Netwrix Auditor helps Holly make sure that customer data is located only in secured locations and that only authorized users can access it.
  • Detecting suspicious activity faster. By reviewing Netwrix Auditor’s daily reports, Holly enabled timely detection of suspicious activity in all business-critical IT systems, helping ensure secure and stable operations.
  • Reducing IT workload. Thanks to the visibility into Active Directory that Netwrix Auditor provided, Holly spent three weeks instead of the expected six months to rebuild it. Plus, it streamlined routine tasks, enabling her to focus on more strategic priorities.
Netwrix Auditor helps us be more proactive rather than reactive. We can quickly catch potentially malicious activity in the network we might not otherwise see. Our sensitive data is more secure because, thanks to Netwrix Auditor, we know exactly where it resides and who has access to it. I don’t want to think of life without Netwrix Auditor. It makes things so much easier.
Holly McCoy, Senior Information Systems Officer at First National Bank Minnesota
Banks have to provide the highest level of security for financial data. For this reason, they should consider automating the discovery and classification of sensitive data. It empowers IT departments to identify what sensitive content they have and where it is stored in order to prioritize security efforts. Banks also need complete visibility into activity around sensitive data in order to go the extra mile and achieve the highest level of security.
